Description

At time of writing:
- MacPorts: https://trac.macports.org/wiki/howto/buildUniversal exists, but many ports don't build for arm64 yet.
- Homebrew: https://discourse.brew.sh/t/timeline-for-homebrew-on-arm-macs/8191/11 - not supported yet either.

But if it becomes an issue, one can manually build everything ([automake](https://www.gnu.org/software/autoconf/manual/autoconf-2.63/html_node/Multiple-Architectures.html), [CMake](https://medium.com/@simputest/macos-universal-apps-with-xcode-12-and-cmake-b5fdfc58c114)).

Research direction

No files or tests are named. Start by reviewing the repository's macOS packaging scripts and the linked automake and CMake guidance; done would mean establishing whether the packaging can produce macOS binaries containing both x86_64 and arm64 architectures.
