REST API improvements and evolution

More and more, we run into situations where we want to add or improve features that require REST API changes. Also, from an implementation point of view, we eventually need to move away from the Spray library as it's not actively maintained anymore.

Since breaking changes to API v1 are unacceptable, let us collect a list of desiderata for a future version and start implementing it.
