Description

> Holding Shift while launching Anki doesn’t open safemode though. Running anki --safemode explicitly does work, however.

I suspect it's specific to Mutter, but have not tried with a different compositor to confirm. Probably security-related (not allowing keyboard input until a window is focused), which may make it harder to work around.

Research direction

Start by reproducing the failure while launching Anki with Shift held under GNOME/Mutter, then compare it with the working `anki --safemode` command. Check the linked forum report for additional context; done means identifying a reliable fix or documenting the compositor limitation and an appropriate fallback.
