Description

## Spark

Marked Finished in the Media Log during the 2026-08-08 digest check-in — the
third of Sanderson's four Secret Project books to be read, with *Tress of the
Emerald Sea* and *Yumi and the Nightmare Painter* still Active.

## Why it could be interesting

Candidate angle, not yet settled: the book is a portal fantasy whose framing
device is a self-help manual, so the joke and the structure are the same object.
That's a high-wire act — the conceit has to keep paying off for the whole
length or the novelty wears through and what's left is a thin adventure. The
review turns on whether the handbook framing is load-bearing at the end or
whether it's a first-act device the book quietly abandons.

## Open questions

- [ ] Recommend it or not, and to whom?
- [ ] Does the handbook framing hold to the last page, or does the novel take
over and leave the conceit behind?
- [ ] How does it read against the other Secret Projects — is the tonal swing
between them the point of the set?
- [ ] Does this want to be its own review, or a slot in one piece about all four
once *Tress* and *Yumi* are done? (Two remain, so that piece isn't ready.)
