Description

This inexplicable, yet convenient bug has happened to me twice now, where the computer I've been using as my altserver host has been offline for an extended period of time, yet, altstore keeps background refreshing even though the server host is unreachable. All my sideloaded apps remained signed, or at least usable throughout this period. Opening altstore breaks this, and returns to the usual functionality.

Last time when this happened, I had realized that altstore had been working extremely well for me, not requiring user intervention for an unknown period of time, so I opened the app to check how many days I had left on my current batch of certificates, and to my surprise, altstore was displaying that every app signed with altstore (including altstore itself), had -11 Days remaining. Once I went back to the home screen, neither altstore, nor my signed apps would open anymore, displaying the exact same behaviour it does when certificates expire.

The first time this happened, was on my iPhone 11, and it is currently happening on my new 15PM. I have not opened altsore in over a week, and I am certain that my phone is not calling home to the altstore server that I had paired to it, as the macbook air I was running that on, had its motherboard die on September 25th. The first time this happened, my 11 was paired to an altserver running on Windows, so this bug is not Mac specific.

I am willing to open my altstore app and break this functionality for the good of the community, I just want to know how to get all information needed to the devs ahead of time so that this opportunity is not wasted.

Thank you for your time.

Research direction

Start by reproducing the behavior on an iPhone with AltStore opened or left unopened while the paired AltServer host is unreachable, comparing background refresh with certificate expiry. Capture the displayed remaining days and whether AltStore and signed apps remain usable; done means the expiry state and remaining-day display match the actual certificate validity.
