Change the build system (or support others)

I usually use Make for simple projects, but maybe a modern and more intuitive build system ([Meson](https://mesonbuild.com/)?) would be better.

**This is only my subjective opinion on CMake, it's fine if you use and like it**: Please, do not propose CMake. To be brief, I strongly agree with [this article](https://twdev.blog/2021/08/cmake/) and think CMake is too complex and have a weird syntax to use for a build system.
