Description
When reading from a stream, it seems that the list that is returned from a stream is owned by the caller, but that is not clearly spelled out in the documentation.

Research direction
Start with the documentation describing reading from a stream and determine where ownership of the returned list is specified. Clarify whether the caller owns that list, and consider the documentation complete when the ownership rule is explicit.
