Description
To: SteamOS Development Team / Valve Corporation
As SteamOS expands beyond the Steam Deck onto desktop PCs and living room Steam Machines, Desktop Mode evolves from a utility background tool into a core pillar of the user experience. In a market where hardware components and upgrade costs remain high, the strength of SteamOS should lie in maximum software efficiency, flexibility, and user accessibility—whether on a 65" TV or a multi-monitor desk setup.
While KDE Plasma offers immense flexibility, customizing Desktop Mode currently requires technical manual tweaks and third-party plugins that frequently break following SteamOS atomic system updates.
To make SteamOS the ultimate all-in-one operating system, we propose a native Valve tool—SteamOS Appearance & Desktop Hub—along with core system optimizations:
- One-Click Layout Switcher (ZorinOS Style)
A simple native interface to instantly switch desktop paradigms:
Living Room / TV Mode (10-Foot UI Desktop): Features large icons, an enlarged taskbar, and scaled text designed for effortless controller navigation from the couch.
Windows Classic / 11 Layout: Traditional start menu and bottom taskbar layout for seamless user onboarding from Windows.
macOS / Dock Layout: Bottom dock with a clean top panel.
Compact / Handheld Layout: Tailored for smaller handheld screens.
- Native Live Wallpaper Support (Steam Workshop Integration)
The Issue: Wallpaper Engine is one of the top-selling applications on Steam, yet running live/animated wallpapers in SteamOS Desktop Mode relies on third-party KDE plugins that break after OS updates.
The Proposal: A native rendering engine baked into SteamOS/KDE Plasma that allows users to apply 2D/3D scenes, videos, and dynamic wallpapers directly from the Steam Workshop with one click, completely update-safe across atomic system upgrades.
- Native KDE Connect Integration ("SteamOS Connect")
Deeply integrate the power of KDE Connect into both Game Mode and Desktop Mode with zero manual firewall/pairing hassle:
Wireless File Transfer: One-tap transfer of ROMs, media, and files between smartphones/PCs and SteamOS storage over Wi-Fi.
Phone as a Couch Trackpad: Turn any smartphone screen into a remote trackpad and virtual keyboard for living room TV Desktop navigation.
Shared Clipboard: Instantly copy text, URLs, or activation codes on a phone/PC and paste directly into SteamOS.
- Storage & Legacy Hardware Optimizations (SATA SSD Support)
Maximizing performance without forcing users to buy new M.2 NVMe motherboards:
First-Class SATA SSD Support: Official installer support optimized for traditional SATA SSDs, HDDs, and SD cards.
Transparent File Compression (zstd on Btrfs): Real-time system-level file compression. Reduces game install sizes and drastically speeds up loading times on SATA SSDs, as modern CPUs decompress data faster than SATA bandwidth constraints.
Memory Management via zram: In-memory RAM compression to maintain smoothness on systems with lower physical RAM specifications.
- Curated Software Hub & 1-Click System Restore
SteamOS Software Hub: A streamlined Flatpak app store for 1-click installation of essential desktop software (Discord, Spotify, OBS, LibreOffice, EmuDeck) featuring Valve verification badges.
1-Click System Restore (Btrfs Snapshots): A dedicated "Rollback Desktop Settings" feature to easily undo desktop layout breakages caused by user tweaks.
