Symptoms
Before the latest update to experimental-8.0-20230624 a few minutes ago the previous proton experimental (2023/06/06) worked well but since the update after launching the game from within Battle.net I get a black screen with the music playing and the intro movies not playing anymore and while it eventually gets further when being patient you can see the login to Battle.net inside diablo happening and getting to the character selection screen, however the performance is absolutely crawling to the point even the menu is unusable. Also even Alt+Tabbing is taking ages to be able to manually force-stopping the game.
Reproduction
- Launch Diablo IV
- Observe issue
Additional note
- Adding or removing
PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1to get DLSS working in the game doesn't make a difference for the issue - I'm unable to reproduce this issue on another machine running Fedora, there however the nvidia driver is still at
530.41.03instead of the latest535.54.03.

Research direction
Start with the attached steam log and vulkaninfo.txt, then compare the reported Proton experimental versions and NVIDIA driver versions. Reproduce by launching Diablo IV through Battle.net and verify whether the black screen and severe performance issue occur; done means identifying a confirmed cause and a validated fix or regression report.
