Symptoms
Launching the game while SteamVR is active makes it crash on launch.
It opens up and shows a black screen for a few seconds before crashing.
Launching the game while SteamVR is not running makes it seemingly boot correctly and progress to the loading screen, although that's not really helpful considering it's a VR-only game and you are just stuck standing around in the world.
Reproduction
- Install the game, Proton and SteamVR.
- Launch SteamVR.
- Launch the game from within SteamVR.
- Crash after a few seconds.
Notes
- The game allows you to choose between SteamVR and OpenXR and both result in the same issue.
- Launching the game from within the Steam library makes it not boot up at all, even though doing that works with any other VR game in my library. It has to be launched from within SteamVR.

Research direction
Start by reviewing the attached Proton log and system report, then reproduce the launch from SteamVR with the listed Proton versions. Done means the game no longer crashes after showing a black screen when launched with SteamVR active.
