Symptoms
When installing the game, DirectX install fails if using native Linux version of Steam. See https://www.protondb.com/app/26000
As soon as the game installs, the message "An internal system error occured. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your Windows folder to determine problem."
See logs here:
DirectX.log
DXError.log
And Proton log here:
steam-26000.log
This is step 1/2 of the install. Step 2/2 seems fine, but then the game just doesnt start.
If using the Wine version of steam (installing Steam through wine, and then installing The Maw from that Steam install), the game installs and plays fine.
Reproduction
1 - Use the Linux version of Steam
2- Install The Maw
3- Kaboom. Yes Rico, kaboom.

Research direction
Start by reproducing the installation with the native Linux Steam client and Proton, then inspect the attached DirectX.log, DXError.log, and steam-26000.log. Compare the result with the reported Wine Steam setup; done means The Maw completes installation and starts under Proton.
