Symptoms
In-game videos cause the game to crash. This appears to be a regression.
The game will crash immediately when the video starts with Proton 7.0-3
Proton log with 7.0-3
The game will crash with Proton Experimental (note that Proton Experimental before the June 30 update played a corrupt video for a second before crashing).
Proton log with Experimental
Proton 6.3-8 does play the video and the game appears to work properly. But my controller does not work in this version. I have the XBox One controller and tried using both the wired connection and the Microsoft USB wireless dongle with the xone driver. Oddly, the controller seems to work when pressing a button to skip the intro video, but stops working in the game's main menu and during gameplay.
Proton log with 6.3-8
This appears to be a regression because when I first purchased this game, I played for a few hours and did not have any controller or video issues. I'm not sure what Proton version I was using at the time, but it would have been the default version of Proton around April 21, 2022. Judging by the Proton release dates, this could have been 7.0-2 or 7.0-1.
Reproduction
Run the game. Wait for the 3 intro screens to play (design studio, etc.). At this point the games intro video is supposed to play, but the game will crash.
Current workaround is to go to the game's local files: /path/to/install/steamapps/common/Dark Devotion/Cines
And rename the files: Intro.wmv, Outro1.wmv and Outro2.wmv to change the extension (something like .bak will work).
The game will run, but instead of the video, there will be a black screen instead of the video along with the subtitles that play with the video.

Research direction
Start by reproducing the crash from the game's intro video with Proton 7.0-3 and Proton Experimental, then compare the linked Proton logs with the working Proton 6.3-8 report. Verify the controller behavior as well as video playback; done means the game starts without crashing during videos and the controller works in menus and gameplay.
