Description

I have a laptop with amd processor (and integrated gpu) and nvidia gpu. To switch between the two I use optimus-manager. However, the update in drivers 470 made some changes so that it's possible to run stuff on nvidia gpu while in "integrated" mode, where X11 session uses integrated gpu and nvidia gpu stays powered down until needed. This is similar to how things work in windows.

So I tried to run The Witcher 3 and realized I couldn't (here is output of steam run in terminal). However, I can run it if I switch to "Nvidia" mode in optimus-manager (where X11 session is ran on Nvidia gpu), or if I use proton 5.0. Looks like sort of a regression to me.

Research direction

Start by reproducing The Witcher 3 on an Optimus laptop in integrated mode with Proton versions newer than 5.0, using the linked Steam output and system-information gist as context. Compare the working Proton 5.0 and Nvidia-mode cases, then confirm that the game launches on the Nvidia GPU without requiring Nvidia X11 mode.
