Proton log: steam-302370.log

Symptoms

Game starts and reports "Digital Sound Initialization Error: Another application is currently using the Sound Device or Intel RSX 3D drivers are not installed.", after clicking OK, it shows what looks like an old-school NTSC test pattern for a few seconds, then exits.

Reproduction

Just start the game with Proton 6.3-1 selected as the compatibility tool.

Other notes

Being designed back in the Windows 95 era, this game is notoriously difficult to get working on modern versions of Windows. Most of the discussions threads on Steam are about just trying to get it working, as are all the guides.

Two guides, in case the software installations involved might give some clues as to how to fix this:

Research direction

Reproduce the failure with Proton 6.3-1 and inspect the attached steam-302370.log alongside the reported system information. Compare the two linked Steam guides for relevant runtime requirements, then determine whether the sound-initialization error and NTSC test pattern can be resolved in Proton; a fix should let the game start normally.
