Symptoms
Layers of Fear VR starts correctly, even starts playing. But after a few seconds of playing, it crashes steamvr completely, the game kind of continues playing but the HMD turns off and sound changes to the regular speakers. SteamVR says "Oh no! SteamVR has encountered an unexpected problem." (screenshot attached)
Reproduction
- Start the game (Valve Index)
- You can choose "New Game", or "Continue". It will start loading.
- After loading you'll appear inside the house, just before the first door. A few seconds later, no matter what you do or don't do, the game will crash.
- Since it seems it also screws SteamVR IPC, even restarting SteamVR will not make VR work. A reboot makes SteamVR work again.
Note: the current steam log has crashed even before the inside the house scene even appeared, shortly after the loading screen disappeared. I also included the most recent logs under ~/.steam (error.log and the files under steam/logs/) for good measure.

Research direction
Start by reproducing Layers of Fear VR with Proton 5.13-6 and the Valve Index, following the listed loading sequence. Inspect steam-1183030.log, steam_logs.zip, ~/.steam/error.log, and the files under ~/.steam/steam/logs/. Done means the game no longer crashes SteamVR after entering the house and SteamVR remains usable without a reboot.
