Description

Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Magical Battle Festa
  • Steam AppID of the game: 292480

System Information

  • OS: Xubuntu 20.04
  • GPU: AMD Radeon R9 290x
  • Driver/LLVM version: Mesa 20.0.8/LLVM 10.0.0
  • Kernel version: Tested on 5.4.0-42-generic (Ubuntu's official kernel for 20.04) and 5.7.0-19.1-liquorix-amd64 (a kernel that's been optimized for gaming)
  • Link to full system information report as Gist: https://gist.github.com/Yowlen/fc7add87576b330777fab4b472877290
  • Proton version: Tested with 5.0-9 and 5.9-GE-5-ST

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

(The logs are from the Liquorix kernel, but the behavior is the same on Ubuntu's official kernel.)

Symptoms

Two problems:

  1. The config window in the launcher doesn't display any config options. They can be briefly seen when switching tabs, but instantly disappear afterwards. (Note that this wasn't done while I was logging due to problem 2 being more critical, so there won't be any info on it. I can redo the logs if need be.)
  2. The Fly System logo appears on startup, but when it fades out, it'll crash in different ways depending on the version of Proton being used:
  • For Proton 5.0-9, it'll fade out, but then it'll blink as if it's redoing the last few frames of the fadeout. It remains in this state until it's closed out.
  • For GloriousEggroll's Proton 5.9-GE-5-ST, it'll instead gracefully crash to the desktop.

Reproduction

For the first issue, start up the game and in the first window, click the "Config" button to bring up the appropriate window.

For the second issue, start up the game and use the "Start" button (either on the main menu or the Config window). Press any key after the loading completes as instructed and it'll display the logo and then crash as described.

Edit: Updated to add info on Ubuntu's official kernel to help ensure all the bases are covered. I forgot I was using a different one. ^_^;

Research direction

Start by reproducing the launcher Config and Start-button failures with Proton 5.0-9 and 5.9-GE-5-ST, then inspect steam-292480-Proton5.0-9.log and steam-292480-GE.log. Done means the configuration options remain visible and Magical Battle Festa gets past the Fly System logo without crashing.
