Symptoms
- The movies are playing, but no video, only audio: Same as here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3908
On Windows there are issues with the videos too: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Project_Freedom#Game_crashes_due_to_missing_codecs - Frame drops, specifically when aiming and shooting. (with dxkv and wined3d)
The problem also seems to exist on Windows too: See https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Project_Freedom: Key points
Reproduction
- Play the game
Logs:
- dxvk: steam-34810_dxkv.log
- wined3d: steam-34810_wined3d.log
- Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF: steam-34810_Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF.log
Note:
- I tried from HDD and SSD, no difference on the frame drops side.
- I can play the videos with vlc or mpv without any problems.
- Using Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF, the frame drops are gone.

Research direction
Start by reviewing the linked DXVK, wined3d, and Proton-5.8-GE-2-MF logs, then reproduce the game with Proton 5.0-7 using the reported AMD Radeon RX 580 and Arch Linux setup. Compare video playback and frame drops with DXVK and wined3d; the issue is done when the responsible compatibility problem is identified and a verified fix or limitation is documented.
