Description

Compatibility Report

  • Name : Star Wars Rebellion
  • Steam AppID : 441550

System Information

  • GPU: GTX 970
  • Driver/LLVM version: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 418.74
  • Kernel version: 4.19.0-6-amd64
  • Link to full system info : Debian Steam gist
  • Proton version: 4.11-13

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

The game appears to work normally, except that tactical space battles instantly crash the game.

Two untitled pop-up windows appear, stating respectively :

Unrecognized error value.

And then :

D3DRMERR_BADVALUE

The program then exits (see crash report below).

steam-441550.log

Reproduction

Simply run the game and provoke a fleet battle (playing as the rebels, moving any of your fleet to Coruscant and fast-forwarding the game until it arrives should trigger one) ; then use the rightmost button at the bottom of the popup window to go to the tactical 3D view. The game then instantly crashes 100% of the time on my machine.

There is a very longstanding similar issue on the Wine bugtracker (though the original reporter seems to imply that they do get the battle interface, which I don't see here).

Workaround

The game can technically be played to completion by saving often (just in case) and auto-resolving all fleet battles, which avoids the crash. However, this significantly alters the player options and badly affects game balance (not to mention that this lack low-poly 3D space battles disturbs me ; no pew-pew, no joy :( ).

Research direction

Start by reproducing the crash in Star Wars: Rebellion by opening the tactical 3D view during a fleet battle, then inspect steam-441550.log and the related Wine bug 16149. Done means tactical space battles open and complete without the game crashing or showing the reported D3DRMERR_BADVALUE error.
