Description

Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Dead Island
  • Steam AppID of the game: 91310

System Information

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

The game starts to a black screen and while the screen does stay black the whole time, the main menu eventually seems to load in the background since moving the mouse around makes the "cursor hovering over the menu items" noise.

Reproduction

Download the game, force the game to use Proton instead of the native version.

(Note: The native Linux version is inferior to the Windows one as it's missing several important graphics options, which is why I'm trying to run the game via Proton.)

Research direction

Start by reproducing Dead Island 91310 with Proton 4.11-4, then inspect the attached steam-91310.log alongside the linked system information report. Done means identifying and resolving the cause of the persistent black screen while the menu remains usable in the background.
