Symptoms

When I add a rocket to the fishing line, it is supposed to fire right after the cast and extend the cast distance. The rocket fires, raising the height of the cast lure, and burns out in less than a second. After that, the lure begins to fall and comes back to the water's surface.

Instead, what happens on this PC is that the rocket fires, the sound effect stutters and cuts out. The visual effect of the rocket firing lasts the normal time. When the lure should begin to fall back to the water's surface, it instead goes upward (very rapidly), off the top of the screen. The cast either goes way further than it should (often, if I cast while at the dock, it flies past the entire playable area and lands in the fish-free area beyond), or it simply keeps going infinitely, at which time the game is unresponsive (it's waiting for the cast to finish, but it never does), and I force close the game. I suppose it might eventually come back down, but there's not much point in waiting... the game is not really playable like that.

Reproduction

Select the rocket from the menu and add it to the line, then press the left mouse button to cast, releasing the mouse button at the time that would usually result in a long cast (which is what you want when using the rocket). The lure goes upward at about a 45 degree angle when the right release time was selected.

The malfunction happens on nearly every cast. Very rarely the cast distance is as expected, or close; somewhat rarely it drops the line straight down even with a proper release, or does something else unexpected. The super-long cast or never-ending cast happens almost every time.

System is an Acer Swift 1 113-31 laptop. It showed up as "Unknown" in the system report.

Research direction

Start with the attached steam-343780.log and reproduce the rocket-casting failure on the reported Acer Swift 1 using Ubuntu 5.0.0-20, Mesa 19.0.2, and Proton 3.7-8. Compare the behavior with the described reproduction steps; done means the rocket cast falls normally and completes without sending the lure off-screen or hanging.
