Symptoms
Joystick (with steam input turned on and off) doesn't work when not directly up/down or left/right. Inbetweens just don't respond.
Tested with both PS4 and XBOne controller
Video:

(Bonus bug: DS4 shows as XB1 in game, but that may be due to how the kernel has the "name" of the controller, and it can't detect it in both native and proton)
Reproduction
Don't use native, run proton version.
Launch game with controller plugged
Spin the left stick.

Research direction
Start by reproducing the issue with 7 Days to Die under Proton 4.2-9 using a PS4 or Xbox One controller, then inspect steam-251570.log alongside the stated system information. Verify the left stick responds at diagonal angles with Steam Input both enabled and disabled; the controller should no longer ignore intermediate directions.
