Symptoms
When launching the game a black screen opens with a tiny message box stating "Fatal error!" (picture)

The title of the window reads "The UE4-WitchingTower Game has crashed..."
Reproduction
Start the game in VR. Launching the game without SteamVR launches the game fine but without VR, making it unplayable.
