Symptoms

After playing for a few minutes to half an hour the game freezes X with only momentary updates to the screen every minute or so. The only way to get back to a functioning desktop is to press alt+sysrq+k and restart X.

• Linux Mint 18.3, Linux Mint 19.1
• NVIDIA 390.87

Reproduction

Start Dead Rising 3, go to chapter 2 and start at the mechanic base. Create a lot of havoc on screen to stress the system by killing a lot of zombies using the steamroller.

Start with the attached steam-265550.log and the linked kernel log, then reproduce the freeze using Dead Rising 3 chapter 2 at the mechanic base while creating heavy on-screen activity. Compare the reported Proton 3.16-6 Beta and NVIDIA driver environments with the listed alternate kernels and drivers; done means the X freeze is resolved or its cause is isolated.
