Recent Failure Reports:

  • Proton version: 3.7-8

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Sound crackling and popping. #1147 fixes it.

Everything else is perfect. This would have been a whitelist request but for the sound problem. You can tell this title uses an embedded copy of ScummVM via lsing the game directory (scummvm.exe).

Can't be whitelisted because of the user configuration change requirement. See also: https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Riven:_The_Sequel_to_Myst

...

After having done a little more research I think I see one of the things going on. ScummVM has to be specially compiled with Mohawk engine support (./configure --enable-all-engines). It sounds like Cyan is using that combo as a compatibility layer. Not sure if scummvm for linux would have solved the audio issues but I have my suspicions.

Reproduction

Start an Ubuntu 16.06 system.

Enable Steam Play for unapproved titles.

Open Riven.

Sound should be immediately crackly and poppy in the sound test.

Research direction

Start by reviewing the Riven compatibility report, the referenced issue #1147, and the embedded scummvm.exe mentioned in the game directory. Reproduce the issue using Steam Play with Proton 3.7-8 on Ubuntu and verify that the crackling and popping are resolved without requiring a user configuration change.
