Symptoms

Currently the game loads up in steam play but has issues with not displaying correctly as everything except for the view window is black. When resizing the window you can, very quickly, see what is being blacked out before it blacks out again.

Reproduction

Start the game, log in (account creation is free and fast at meridian59.com)

Start by reproducing Meridian 59 under Steam Play with Proton 3.16 on the reported Ubuntu and Intel Mesa setup. Review the attached steam-893390.log and observe the black rendering during startup and window resizing. Done means the game view and surrounding window render correctly without the reported black areas.
