Symptoms
Starting the game produces a black screen that will be pushed into the background by an error message box containing the following message nDShowServer::PlayFile(): could not render file 'Z:/opt/steam/SteamApps/steamapps/common/Drakensang/export/data/movies/intro16_9.mpg'.
Hitting the OK button brings up another error message box titled Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library with the following content:
Runtime Error!
Program Z:\opt...
This application has requested the Runtime to
terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more
information.
After hitting OK on that box, the game shuts down.
Reproduction
Simply try to start Drakensang.

Research direction
Start by reproducing the failure by launching Drakensang with Proton 3.7-5 Beta, then inspect steam-12640.log alongside the reported nDShowServer error for intro16_9.mpg. Done means the game starts without the black screen, media-rendering error, or runtime termination.
