Description

Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter
  • Steam AppID of the game: 4225980

System Information

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5060
  • Video driver version: NVIDIA 610.57.04 (open kernel module)
  • Kernel version: 7.1.8-200.fc44.x86_64

  • Proton version: Proton 11.0-2c (affected); Proton 10.0-4b (not affected)

I confirm:

  • that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Semi-transparent black shadow blocks flicker on indoor floors/tables. They look like shadows cast by local lights (see the shadow blocks behind the lamp at top-left of the picture). The shadows changes only when camera moves.

Image

The issue is reproducible by walking back and forth across the same spot.

Changing FSR/DLSS, disabling SSAO/DoF, and any other graphic settings DOES NOT HELP. The issue occurs with Proton 11.0-2c and Proton Experimental.

Switching the game to Proton 10.0-4b fixes the flickering at the same location.

Game build: 25340742

Reproduction

  1. Run the game with Proton 11.0-2c.
  2. Load a save in (literally any) indoor room with local lights.
  3. Walk back and forth. The shadow blocks appear and disappear.
  4. Exit the game and select Proton 10.0-4b without changing anything else. The shadows no longer flicker.

Notes

This protondb report reports similar issue. Maybe something went wrong with DXVK 2.7.1?

Research direction

Start by reproducing the flickering in Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter using Proton 11.0-2c and the provided indoor-room steps, then compare it with Proton 10.0-4b, where the issue is absent. Investigate the reported DXVK 2.7.1 change and confirm that the shadow blocks no longer appear or flicker under the affected Proton version without changing game settings.
