Description

I'm opening this as a general thread, because several OpenGL games are affected by the same issue: basically they run poorly on a Wayland session (tested on Plasma and gamescope) with Proton 10 and 11. Zink (MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink %command%) helps the situation (holding their performance in ~58 fps). I had opened issues on Mesa's gitlab, but since now I've found the real cause, I'm not sure there is the right place.

List of affected games:

Specs:

  • OS: Arch
  • Kernel: 6.18.49
  • GPU: RX 6700 XT (Mesa 26.1.8)
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 5700G (8c/16t)
  • DE: Plasma 6.7.4 (wayland/x11)
  • Display device: 1440p/120hz
  • Full system specs: system_specs.tar.gz

Research direction

Start by reproducing the listed games on a Wayland session with Proton 10 or 11, comparing normal rendering with MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=zink %command% and with X11. Use the linked Proton and Mesa issues plus the attached system specs to compare reports; done requires an isolated cause and a targeted fix or clearly documented upstream handoff.
