Research direction
Start by reproducing the issue in the Explorer viewlet using Ctrl + Alt + F, then pressing "l" in search mode on VSCode 1.94.0 with VSCodeVim v1.28.1. Trace the handling of that key in Explorer search mode; done means the selected document opens without the null "element" error.
