Description

Describe the bug
When h and l are rebound they work as expected at first. Moving the cursor left works as expected, moving right does too if you did that first. Then, when trying to move the cursor in the other direction it will require an extra keystroke before it actually starts moving.

To Reproduce

  1. Paste the following in settings.json:
	"vim.normalModeKeyBindings": [
		{
			"before": [
				"t"
			],
			"after": [
				"h"
			],
		},
		{
			"before": [
				"y"
			],
			"after": [
				"l"
			],
		},
	]
  1. Save the file
  2. Hit y to move the cursor one step to the left.
  3. Hit t to try to move the cursor to the right, nothing happens
  4. Hit t again and the cursor now moves.

Expected behavior
The dead keystroke would not be required

Environment (please complete the following information):

  • Extension (VsCodeVim) version: v1.23.1
  • VSCode version: 1.69.1
  • OS: NixOS Unstable (x86_64)

Research direction

Reproduce the behavior using settings.json and the vim.normalModeKeyBindings configuration shown in the issue. Trace how the remapped h and l keystrokes are processed in normal mode; done means switching directions moves the cursor immediately without a dead keystroke.
