Research direction
Start by reproducing the issue in VS Code 1.38.1 on Linux x64 with the Vim extension at version 1.10.2, switching between modes while vim-airline is enabled. Identify the status-bar color handling entry point and verify that the color changes for each mode; no source file or test is named in the report.
