Description
vim.statusBarColorControl is terrible for performance because it requires updating VSCode's settings every time you switch modes. As an inferior, but much lighter weight alternative, we could change the color of just our status bar item.

Research direction
Start by tracing the existing statusBarColorControl behavior and the extension's status bar item handling. Determine which mode changes should update the item color without changing VS Code settings; the work is done when that behavior is implemented and its performance impact can be verified.
