log_date_format does not add timestamps to the error log

I have my ecosystem.config.js file set up like this:

log_date_format: "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss",
error_file: "logs/errors.log",
out_file: "logs/app.log"

};
I have timestamps in my out_file log, but none in my error_file log.
I'm using verison 4.1.2.
