Research direction
Start by reproducing the issue with a folder of images on an SMB resource, with thumbnails enabled, and compare thumbnail loading with opening an image in the default system image application. Trace the file manager entry points involved in SMB image access and thumbnail generation. Done means thumbnails and image opening no longer take minutes and remain responsive on the reported devices.
