Merits
Virtu is roughly a 10 year old core without any updates delivered to it in ever, and only supports a single Apple ][ system.
The replacement would allow the other platforms from the same line to be selectable to also have performance improvements, and also the core work is more up-to-date.
Technical details
Don't have any information for technical details, but MAME for Arcade has been ported across.

Research direction
Start by reviewing BizHawk's existing Virtu Apple II core and the MAME source repository linked in the issue, then compare the available Apple II platforms and core requirements. Done would mean replacing the outdated core with the MAME-based implementation and making the additional Apple II systems selectable on Win, Mac, and Tux.
