Description
Summary
If you sit on the title screen long enough, the game will try to play one of two demos. The game will fade to black, and the expected behavior is the demo map will load a second later and start playing, but on Bizhawk it hangs on a black screen forever until the game is reset (Soft Resetting works fine). No error dialogue window appears. The core is Mupen64Plus with GLideN64 as the plugin. When I try testing on standalone Mupen64Plus (via up-to-date Simple64) the demos play fine as they are supposed to, which leads me to suspect a Bizhawk-specific issue. It's worth noting that this only appears to occur on all NTSC versions of the game (hashes are 1cc5cf3b4d29d8c3ade957648b529dc1 for US 1.0, 06b58673f7d31c56f8fe8186e86f6bd6 for US 1.2/Rev 2, and 256a1cb23f9e1a2762a7a171417b5d68 for JPN). On the PAL version (57146b6cd8ee7d96b01a811f98a1ac61), the demos play fine. No tools or scripts are open.
Repro
- Open a Castlevania 64 NTSC ROM normally.
- Pick "Proceed without saving" on the scroll menu that appears if no save data exists (or enable the memory card and create it, your choice).
- Let the game run until a demo plays on the title screen. Press START a few times to get to the title faster.

Research direction
Start by reproducing the hang with the listed Castlevania 64 NTSC ROMs in BizHawk, then compare their title-screen demos with the PAL version and standalone Mupen64Plus using GLideN64. Done means the NTSC demos load and begin playing without requiring a reset.
