Description

I believe that using the framework this project built, we can build a full Linux desktop environment targeting VR/AR devices. This UI concept could be used as a starting point.
Some of these ideas might be difficult or even impossible, but I just wish to share my vision for this project.

Here is a list of my suggestions:

  • Curved workspace geometry. Place flat 2d windows on a curved spherical surface around the user.
  • Title bars. Add regular title bars used to drag, minimize and toggle full-screen mode.
  • Full-screen mode. Show a single large window in front of the user.
  • Dock. Add a dock to which apps would be minimized, pinned, or launched from at the bottom of the screen.
  • Keyboard and mouse tracking. You can estimate the position of the mouse based on movement and calibrate the keyboard position and size based on 4 points selected with a VR controller.
  • App Indicators and panels. A lot of apps fully depend on them. It would also allow the user to see time, battery level, or signal at a glance.
  • "The Bridge". An area at the bottom of the screen with several slots for windows and an app launcher in the middle.
  • Workspaces. Implement workspaces as in most desktop environments.
  • Some kind of login UI and lock screen.

Research direction

The issue names no files, tests, or entry points; begin by narrowing the wishlist to one scoped feature and locating the relevant desktop or VR UI entry point in the repository. Done would require an agreed specification and implementation criteria for that feature rather than the full set of suggestions.
