Description

https://lichess.org/forum/lichess-feedback/why-does-opening-a-message-that-links-to-lichess-ladders-terminate-the-game#vHozWmKh

This is not the LiChess Tools Ladders notification, but the regular message from Lichess Ladders that sends a message to the user. It may happen just as well for any person messaging you.

The solution might be to make sure the notification clicks always open a new page rather than focus on Lichess Ladders.

Research direction

Reproduce the problem by following a regular Lichess message notification during a game, then locate the notification click handling in the extension. Verify the behavior for messages from Lichess Ladders and other users; done means opening the linked content in a new page without forfeiting or otherwise disrupting the game.
