Research direction

Start by reviewing how rate functions for jumps are defined and how integrators and symbolic indexing are represented in the current interface. The issue names no files or tests, so first identify the relevant API entry points and establish whether the desired outcome is a design decision, documentation change, or implementation with regression coverage.
