Description

Currently we only support 64-bit software fallback, which can be quite inefficient on 32-bit targets.

Research direction

The issue does not name files or tests. Start by locating the existing 64-bit software fallback and the backend structure in the repository, then determine how a soft32 implementation should fit those conventions. Done means 32-bit targets have an equivalent software backend without relying only on the 64-bit fallback.
