Reddit have changed their policy on self served API app keys appearing to break custom builds of RedReader. Any way around this?

Following the "CONTRIBUTING.md" guide, to run a custom build of RedReader you're meant to create your own API key at https://old.reddit.com/prefs/apps, place it in your custom build's reddit_auth.txt and also the "client ID override" setting in the app.

I was successfully able to make a custom build of RR with a tonne of quality of life mods using the above method. I was using an API key I'd made years ago and everything was fine until about a week ago when I started getting API access token errors.

Reddit recently stated they are revoking the ability to self serve app tokens with their new "responsible builder policy" but also claimed "current access won’t be affected" - but the timing of all of this seems a bit odd given my issues.

Any ideas on things I could check/test?

Start with CONTRIBUTING.md and the custom-build instructions for reddit_auth.txt and the client ID override. Reproduce the API access token errors, then check whether the Reddit policy affects self-served keys or existing access. Done means identifying a confirmed cause and documenting a verified workaround or limitation.
