Description

Contributor guide
First steps
- Read the whole issue, then the project's contributing guide.

- Open a pull request that references the issue number.
Research direction
Start by reviewing the linked Stack Overflow approach and the repository's existing pull request and tag history. Determine whether the old version tags can be backfilled consistently and what tag history the changelog should reference; done means the historical tags are created and the changelog can point to them.
