Description

Here's how we could do this, not sure if it can be automated but we could go through PRs to backfill the tag history (which a backfilled changelog can point to).

First steps

  1. Read the whole issue, then the project's contributing guide.
  2. Comment on the issue to say you are picking it up — it saves two people doing the same work.
  3. Fork the repository and make your change on a branch.
  4. Open a pull request that references the issue number.

Research direction

Start by reviewing the linked Stack Overflow approach and the repository's existing pull request and tag history. Determine whether the old version tags can be backfilled consistently and what tag history the changelog should reference; done means the historical tags are created and the changelog can point to them.
