Description

As per @richardjgowers' comment in #620 : we should have a means of defining tests that require internet as optional / skipped by default.

Options:

  • Define an environment variable that just gets checked on a skipif fixture
  • Define a custom plugin

Research direction

Start by reviewing the referenced discussion in issue #620 and comparing the two proposed approaches: an environment variable checked by a skipif fixture or a custom plugin. No files or tests are named in this issue. Done means internet-dependent tests are skipped by default while providing a clear opt-in mechanism to run them.
