common: getLastReference always returns first reference

The common adaptor has a function called lastReferenceValue:

Note that it always returns from references[0];

composeNextState will append old data to the end of the references array:

Ie, the most recent data is at the end of the array.

So getLastReference() will always return the first reference.

Start by locating the common adaptor's lastReferenceValue and composeNextState functions. Trace how references are appended and verify that getLastReference() returns the most recent reference rather than the first; done means the behavior is corrected and the relevant tests pass.
