Research direction

Start by reading the implementations of execute_batch(), start_and_wait(), and related helpers to understand how jobs are submitted, waited on, and cancelled. Define how the new duration option should apply across these entry points, then verify that an overlong job is cancelled and that normal completion remains unaffected.
