Templating issue - code fences are getting wiped out

As reported in this, thread. He is seeing two issues:
) the well-known bug related to --- being replaced with five stars. Minimally, this should only replace frontmatter at the front of the file. Not globally, in the middle of lines.
2) code fence markers in a template are being completely wiped out by the template rendering.
