Description

SAM comes with a collection of 25 "typical wind" or TMY resource files that represent the wind resource at common terrain types for U.S. wind farms and represent historical wind resource data from 1997 - 2010 with data at 50, 80, 110 and 140 meters above the ground.

The WIND Toolkit's HRRR MET endpoint provides single-year data from 2015 to 2025 (as of May 2026) for any location in the Continental U.S. and can be accessed via the API or the Wind Resource Database (WRDB).

Consider removing the old typical wind TMY files from SAM, and replacing default wind resource files with single-year files from the HRRR MET data.

Note that wind resource downloads from the Wind Resource page will access HRRR MET data when this issue is closed: https://github.com/NatLabRockies/SAM/issues/2018.

Research direction

Review issue #2018 and the linked HRRR MET endpoint first, then inventory the 25 typical wind TMY files and the references that provide default wind resources. Done means the project has an agreed replacement or removal plan implemented consistently, with the default resources and Wind Resource page behavior verified.
