Description

What is the context of the feature/improvement?

In Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare 1 I have been running into parties with normal maps that gets displayed incorrectly. I think that the game also uses gray scale transparency maps that gets used incorrectly but I'm unsure

Please describe the feature/improvement?

Even if some types of textures just gets ignored it would be preferable to have a clear tag for them for achieving purposes and easier tagging since you won't have to think twice about it, in this case normal maps plus it would reduce extra work with restaging for newer versions that adds support for new texture categories Eg with an material editor.

What would be your solution? (optional)

Add clear sub categories for Eg normal maps, specular/roughness textures, skin, hair, cloth and metals etc even if it doesn't matter now it would remove some guesswork for what the different categories are expected to be used and future proof against pipeline challenges

Research direction

No files, tests, or entry points are named. Start by clarifying how the runtime currently classifies texture categories and confirm the normal-map and grayscale-transparency behavior in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare 1. Done should include an agreed category taxonomy and defined handling for the proposed texture types.
