Describe the bug

Since the upgrade of the NVIDIA drivers to 590.44.01 from 580.95.05-1 coinciding with Bazzite 43.2025.12.31 release some DX12/vkd3d-proton games on Linux crash after a couple of minutes of gameplay with a "Failed to Create PipelineState" message.

In my case specifically, this occurs in STALKER 2 run over the proton-10.3 compatibility layer.

The issue is reported by other players using Proton compatibility layer across different Linux distributions, for all 580.XX.XX -> 590.XX.XX drivers update: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1643320/discussions/0/689744928092237697/

The issue in my case was resolved by rolling to the last Bazzite version back to the last one with 580.XX.XX drivers (580.95.05-1), and similar rollbacks seem to have solved the issue for other users as per thread cited above.

This bug has been independently reported to the game developer and to the Bazzite distribution developers: https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite/issues/3810

To Reproduce

In my specific case:

  • Install a Bazzite nvidia-open KDE version 43.2025.12.31 or later (including current)
  • Install STALKER 2 on via Steam with default parameters
  • Run the game normally for over 2 minutes.

According to others reports the bug also occurs on other Linux distributions with the current version of 590 drivers (590.48.01): https://steamcommunity.com/app/1643320/discussions/0/689744928092237697/

Research direction

Start with the reported transition from NVIDIA open driver 580.95.05-1 to 590.44.01 and inspect the attached nvidia-bug-report.log.gz. Reproduce on Bazzite 43.2025.12.31 or later using STALKER 2 with Proton 10.3, then compare behavior after reverting the driver. Done means identifying and fixing the driver regression so the game no longer reports "Failed to Create PipelineState."
