Describe the bug

If I connect an external high refresh rate monitor, the hole KDE Plasma desktop is choppy.

It doesn't matter the display settings:

  • Disabling screens
  • Cloning screens
  • Which is the primary one
  • If refresh rates match
  • Kwin window manager settings
  • Desktop effects like blur and transparency

Setting the power settings to maximum performance, and keeping the laptop screen open and powered on, seem to provide better performance.

To Reproduce
  • Try the desktop without external screen.
  • Try the desktop with external screen.

Research direction

Start by reproducing the choppy KDE Plasma desktop with and without the external high-refresh-rate monitor, then compare the attached proprietary.log.gz and open.log.gz reports. The issue names no source files or tests, so investigation must first identify the display, refresh-rate, and power-management path involved. Done means smooth desktop performance with the external monitor while using the open module.
